Pumps and support for erectile dysfunction: what the facts say
Vacuum erection devices are a clinically proven method. What the studies say, when they make sense and what to expect from the product.

A vacuum erection pump (also known as a VED, vacuum erection device) is a medical device that urological associations recommend as part of the first-line treatment of erectile dysfunction. It is not new and not an experiment.
How it works
The principle is simple: a cylindrical tube is placed around the penis, a manual or battery pump lowers the pressure inside the tube, which draws blood into the body of the penis. Once an erection is achieved, an elastic ring is placed at the base of the penis to retain the blood.
Clinical studies show that a VED is effective in approximately 60 to 80 percent of users who use it regularly. The effect is immediate, not cumulative as with tablets.
When it makes sense
After prostate surgery (radical prostatectomy) a VED is part of standard rehabilitation, it helps preserve the elasticity of penile tissue during the period when the nerve pathways are still recovering.
As an alternative or supplement to erection medication (sildenafil, tadalafil), if these are not effective enough or are contraindicated.
As a long-term option for men who do not want daily tablets or for whom these are not suitable.
What to expect from the product
A quality device has a clear pressure limiter (protection against injury), a transparent tube (visual control), interchangeable rings in several sizes and clear instructions. Prices range from 70 to 200 euros for a reliable product. Cheaper models often have no pressure limiter, this is not an add-on, it is a safety necessity.
Use is usually not painful, but it can cause mild bruising or a sensation of cold. Serious side effects are rare if it is used according to the instructions and with a pressure limiter.
