Oral Sex Protection

Oral sex protection is a thin latex square you lay over the vulva or anus before your mouth touches it. The usual name is a dental dam; our range holds eight products, including squares in five flavours and latex-free condoms.

The purpose is simple: a barrier between mouth and mucous membrane that reduces the transmission of sexually transmitted infections.

A dental dam is a latex or polyurethane (very thin, soft plastic) square of about 15cm by 15cm which you can use to cover the anus or female genitals during oral sex.
NHS

How it is used

Unfold the square and lay it over the area before your mouth and tongue touch it. Keep it in place while it is in use and do not turn it over — only one side is used. If you move from one area to another, take a fresh square. It is not meant to be reused.

What is in the range

The latex squares come in five flavours: grape, mint, strawberry, vanilla and wild blackberry. The flavour sits on the side facing the mouth and does not affect the barrier. Alongside the squares, the range includes an oral condom and latex-free condoms for anyone who does not tolerate latex.

Where the protection ends

A square protects what it covers. Areas left uncovered, and skin-to-skin contact, are not protected, so some infections can still pass even with correct use. That is not an argument against using one — it is a reason not to treat it as complete safety.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a condom instead of a square?
For oral sex on a penis, a condom is exactly the right thing. The square is for the vulva and anus, where a condom cannot be used.
Can a square be reused?
No. Take a fresh one every time, even if the previous one was only in use briefly.
What if I am allergic to latex?
Squares are also made in polyurethane, and the range includes latex-free condoms. Check the material stated on the individual product.
Does the flavour reduce the protection?
No, as long as you do not turn the square over. The flavour is on one side, and that side should face the mouth throughout.
