Anal Plugs

An anal plug must have a flared base — that single feature separates a safe toy from an emergency-room visit. Everything else (size, material, weight, vibration) is a matter of taste and experience; the base is a safety requirement that no amount of care can replace.

„We hypothesize that a safety string or adequate-sized stopper potentially could have prevented retaining the dildos, since a recurring problem was difficulty in grasping the objects endoluminally.“
— Dahlberg et al., Int J Colorectal Dis 2018

Why the flared base is non-negotiable

The sphincter closes behind an object and draws it inward; without a stop wider than the opening there is no way back. A Swedish study published in 2018 in the International Journal of Colorectal Disease reviewed 85 patients who presented to emergency departments with a retained rectal object between 2009 and 2017, and the authors named the missing stopper as a recurring cause.

Which size to start with

Start smaller than you think. For a first plug a maximum width of around 25–30 mm is sensible — comparable to a finger — and every step up should be small and unhurried. Metal and glass plugs are heavier and hold temperature, silicone is softer and more forgiving, and plugs with a tail or vibration are an upgrade, not a starting point.

Lubricant is not optional

The rectum does not lubricate itself, so lubricant is a condition, not an accessory. The WHO/UNFPA advisory note reports a prospective study in which the condom breakage rate during anal sex was 3% with water-based lubricant and 21.4% with none — the same physics applies to toys. For rectal use WHO gives a target pH of 5.5 to 7, because the rectum is close to neutral, and recommends lubricants below 1200 mOsm/kg.

Frequently asked questions

What size anal plug should a beginner choose?
Pick a plug with a maximum width of about 25–30 mm and a soft, tapered tip. Move up in size only once insertion is comfortable and effortless.
Why must a plug have a flared base?
Because the sphincter pulls objects inward. The base must be clearly wider than the neck so it stays outside the body — toys without one are not made for anal use.
How long can I wear an anal plug?
For as long as it stays comfortable, usually up to two hours. Pain, numbness or bleeding means remove it immediately.
How do I clean a plug?
With warm water and unscented soap, or a dedicated toy cleaner. Silicone and glass tolerate boiling; motorised plugs should only be wiped and never submerged unless they are waterproof.
Is delivery discreet?
Yes. Parcels ship in neutral packaging with no indication of the contents.
