Sildenafil is a medicine. Not a miracle pill, not a lifestyle supplement, not something that should arrive wrapped in marketing gloss. It's a tool with a purpose, a rule for use, and clear limits.
Because we still discuss it with too many euphemisms and too few facts, let's be plain: a conversation about erectile dysfunction isn't an intimate problem you should hide from a doctor. It's a medical question with a clear answer.
When it makes sense
Sildenafil helps when the blood vessels in the penis aren't getting enough signal to relax, not when the problem is desire, stress, or your relationship. A tablet won't solve any of those three. Sildenafil only works in the presence of sexual arousal; it isn't a switch.
It makes sense if you have a recurring problem with erections, not an occasional one. An incomplete erection here and there, brought on by tiredness, alcohol, or stress, is normal. A systematic problem persists for several weeks and recurs across different situations.
A fact you won't find on the packaging: the tablet starts working 30 to 60 minutes after you take it, and the effect lasts up to four hours. A heavy or fatty meal slows it down considerably. A large amount of alcohol weakens it. These technical details belong in the conversation.
Contraindications nobody should skip
This isn't the section you can gloss over. You must not take sildenafil together with nitrates (angina medicines such as nitroglycerin), the combination can cause a dangerously low blood pressure. Some alpha-blockers for blood pressure or the prostate also require a gap of at least four hours.
Caution is essential with heart disease, a recent heart attack or stroke, severe liver or kidney impairment, and retinitis pigmentosa. If in doubt, don't guess, ask a pharmacist or your doctor.
Side effects are usually mild: headache, flushing, indigestion, a blocked nose. Serious side effects, chest pain, an erection lasting more than four hours, sudden loss of vision or hearing, call for an immediate call to the emergency line.
Pharmacy or doctor?
In Slovenia, sildenafil in a 50 mg pack is available at the pharmacy without a prescription, after a pharmacist consult. The pharmacist will ask about your medicines and any heart conditions. That isn't bureaucracy, it's a safety net.
See a doctor if your erectile dysfunction is persistent (more than three months), if you take medicines that could interact, or if you suspect it's a symptom of something broader, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, a hormonal disorder, and depression often show up here first.
A good conversation with your GP takes ten minutes and can save you years of mistaken guessing. Erectile dysfunction in men under 50 is, in roughly a third of cases, an early sign of cardiovascular disease. A tablet hides the symptom; it doesn't address the cause.
Don't buy from dubious websites out of embarrassment. Counterfeits are common and may contain different active ingredients, wrong doses, or impurities. A genuine product is always labelled, the packaging traceable, the origin verified.
